Scallop harvesting along the Big Bend area of the West Coast of Florida has become quite popular as it can be a fun family vacation during the hot Florida summers. The best spots for hunting scallops can be found in the grass flats off Homosassa, Crystal River, Stienhatchee, and Port St. Joe in 4 to 8 feet of water. The unique up swelling of fresh water springs mixed with the Gulf of Mexico salt water makes for ideal conditions for scalloping.

Keystone Dive Products (KDP) is introducing a new catch bag product, called the “Shellfish Inn”, for hunting scallops, stone crab and clams.  The Shellfish Inn shown in the inserted photos, is designed to allow the hunter to capture the prey and safely retain their catch in a mesh bag without the fear of losing their precious catch everytime the bag is opened.  Once the prey is inserted through the one-way flap in the 4-inch diameter mouth/throat, the catch cannot escape until you are ready to remove it.  The mouth attaches to an 18 by 12 inch, black mesh bag with a heavy-duty, plastic bottomzipper for easy catch removal.  The shellfish Inn also has a convient D-ring attachment so it can be simply clipped to the diver to allow for hands free swimming.  The strong handle allows the hunter to easily manuever the bag to capture the prey and lift the full catch bag into the boat.

Every year thousands of novice and experienced divers try their hand at hunting for spiny lobster.  Experienced divers have learned the hard way that having the best catch bag on the market is important to keep from losing a lobster when opening the catch bag to add another catch.

The gold standard of catch bags is the original “Lobster Inn.”

Garlick Manufacturing produced the original, patented Lobster Inn since the late 1970’s.  Upon the death of its inventor, Mr. Fred Garlick, Keystone Dive Products (KDP) acquired the company and is now selling directly to dive shops, and to the public.  KDP offers an upgraded version of the original Lobster Inn, completely made here at our facilities in Port Saint Lucie, Florida.

The upgrades to the original Lobster Inn include rivets to the handle, so it will not break off, and D-rings to facilitate attachment.  It has a brightly colored bag with traditional dive flag red and white colors. The top two-thirds is made of puncture resistant, solid denier nylon while the bottom one-third is white mesh nylon to allow ample water flow. The 26-inch long bag tightly snugs the outside of the 6-inch mouth to discourage lobsters from bunching up around the entrance as they unsuccessfully try to escape.  For easy removal, the bag has a heavy-duty plastic zipper along the bottom with a D-ring to assist with zipping and unzipping the bag (see inserted product photos). KDP found that many divers like to use the D-rings to anchor the bag and for attaching a small float when using it as a joint collection bag.
